How to Speak Up at the Salon Without Feeling Awkward
Share
You shouldn’t need a whole pep talk just to tell your stylist what you want.
Sitting in that chair with a tight smile while they braid your scalp into submission isn’t cute.
It’s your hair.
Your edges.
Your comfort.
And you deserve to speak up about it without feeling like you’re causing drama.
Here’s how to keep it respectful and real:
1. Know What You Want Before You Go
Don’t wait until you’re halfway braided up to realize you didn’t want small knotless. Pull up inspo pics, save that Pinterest board, and come in with a clear plan.
It helps you AND your stylist stay on the same page.
2. Say It with Confidence, Not Apology
You’re not “being picky.” You’re being clear. Try lines like:
-
“Hey, just letting you know I have a tender scalp, so I’ll speak up if it feels too tight.”
-
“I really want to protect my edges, so I’m hoping we can keep tension light around the front.”
-
“Can we talk through the products you’ll be using? I’m trying to avoid anything that dries out my scalp.”
That’s not rude. That’s responsible.
3. Speak Up Early, Not After You Pay
If something feels off while they’re working, say something then. Waiting until you’re already styled (and possibly hurting) to mention it won’t help your stylist fix it or protect your edges. A good stylist wants your feedback.
4. Boundaries Don’t Block Blessings
Yes, they’re the stylist, but you’re the expert on your own scalp. If your edges are breaking, your scalp is sore for days, or your style only lasts a week, it’s okay to re-evaluate. A healthy hair journey means partnering with professionals who respect your voice.
5. Tip Well, But Don’t Tolerate Pain
You can absolutely show appreciation for their work and set boundaries. Tipping doesn’t mean you have to tolerate being uncomfortable or unheard.
Talking to your stylist shouldn’t feel like a battle.
When you speak with love, respect, and clarity, you protect your hair and the relationship.
