Cabello Quebradizo: Why Your Curly Hair Keeps Breaking

Cabello Quebradizo: Why Your Curly Hair Keeps Breaking

Para las que entienden.

Homegirls, first thing to sort out: is your hair breaking or shedding? People use those interchangeably and they are completely different problems with completely different fixes.

Breakage vs. Shedding — How to Tell in Ten Seconds

Pick up a strand you lost and look at the end of it.

Shedding: there is a small white or pale bulb at one end. That is the root. The hair completed its cycle and let go naturally. Losing 50–100 of these a day is normal and there is nothing to fix.

Breakage: no bulb. Both ends look blunt or frayed, and the pieces are often short. The strand snapped somewhere along its length. That is damage, and that is the one you can actually do something about.

Hablando claro: if the little hairs in your brush are short with no bulb, your hair is not falling out. It is snapping. Those are opposite problems and treating breakage like hair loss sends you buying the wrong thing entirely.

Why Curly Hair Breaks More Than Straight Hair

It is structural, not a personal failing.

The curve is the weak point. Every bend in a curl is a point where the strand is thinner and more fragile. A straight hair has no such points. A tight coil has hundreds.

Your scalp oil never reaches the ends. Sebum slides straight down a straight strand. On a curl it has to navigate every one of those bends, and it rarely makes it. That is why curly hair is dry by default — not because you are neglecting it.

Dry hair has no give. Moisturized hair stretches and returns. Dry hair has no elasticity, so the moment you comb, tie, or sleep on it, it snaps instead of bending.

The Five Things Actually Breaking Your Hair

Detangling dry. Never comb curly hair dry. Damp, with slip, from the ends upward — never root down.

Heat without protection. Repeated flat-ironing or blowouts without a heat protectant cooks the protein structure. That damage does not reverse.

Chemical processing stacked on itself. Color over relaxer, or relaxer over color, compounds far past what either does alone.

Cotton pillowcases. Eight hours of friction every night, plus cotton actively absorbing the moisture off your strands.

Tension at the hairline. Tight ponytails, slick-backs and hard brushing. This one shows up first at your contorno because those are the finest hairs you have.

What Actually Fixes It

Moisture first, always. Then protect the moisture you added, then reduce the mechanical stress. Products cannot repair a snapped strand — nothing can — but they absolutely change whether the next one snaps.

The hairline is where this shows up first and where it matters most, because those strands are the finest on your head and the slowest to come back.

When It Is Not Just Breakage

If you are losing hair with the white bulb attached in noticeably larger amounts than usual, that is shedding, not breakage — and sudden heavy shedding can point to thyroid issues, iron deficiency, postpartum hormones, or significant stress. That is a doctor conversation, not a product one.

FAQ

How do I know if my hair is breaking or shedding?

Look at the end of a lost strand. A small white or pale bulb means it shed naturally from the root, which is normal. No bulb, with blunt or frayed ends and often a short piece, means the strand snapped — that is breakage and it is caused by damage.

Why is curly hair more prone to breakage?

Each bend in a curl is a structurally thinner, weaker point, and scalp oil struggles to travel past those bends to reach the ends. That leaves curly hair drier by default, and dry hair has little elasticity, so it snaps instead of stretching.

Can broken hair be repaired?

A snapped strand cannot be rejoined by any product. What products do is improve moisture and elasticity so the remaining strands do not break next, and reduce the friction and tension causing it.

How should I detangle curly hair without breaking it?

Only on damp hair with a conditioner or detangler for slip, working from the ends upward in small sections. Never detangle dry, and never comb from the root down through knots.
