Homegirls, you laid them flat. You tied them down. You did everything right. And by 11AM they're lifting like you never touched them.
Here's the thing nobody tells you: it's not the temperature, and it's not really the humidity percentage on your weather app either. There's a different number that actually predicts this, and once you know it you can look at your phone in the morning and know whether today is a fight.
Relative Humidity Is Lying to You
Relative humidity is a percentage of how much moisture the air could hold at that temperature. That's the catch — warm air holds far more water than cold air. So 70% humidity at 50°F and 70% humidity at 90°F are wildly different amounts of actual water in the air.
This is why Alaska technically ranks as the most humid state in the country by relative humidity. Cold air saturates easily. Nobody's edges are melting in Anchorage.
Dew Point Is the Number That Matters
Dew point measures the actual amount of moisture in the air, not a percentage of a moving target. That's what your hair responds to.
Your hair holds its shape through hydrogen bonds. Water breaks those bonds. The more real moisture in the air, the more bonds break, the more your strands swell and revert — pushing your laid edges up and out no matter what's holding them.
Rough guide once you start watching it:
Below 55°F dew point — comfortable. Your edges behave.
55–64°F — noticeable. You'll feel it, and so will your hairline.
65°F and up — oppressive. This is melt territory. Plan around it.
Where This Hits Hardest
By average dew point, the states dealing with the most actual atmospheric moisture are Hawaii (65.2°F), Florida (62.7°F), Louisiana (58.3°F), Mississippi (55.6°F) and Alabama (54.0°F) — with Georgia and East Texas right behind.
Those are annual averages, which understates the summer. Jackson, New Orleans, Tampa, Macon and Birmingham all run morning relative humidity in the mid-80s to low-90s through the hot months, with July and August dew points regularly sitting above 70°F.
If that's where you live, you're not doing anything wrong. You're styling in the hardest conditions in the country for four to five months a year, and most edge control was formulated and tested nowhere near it.
Why Your Product Specifically "Melts"
Two different failures get called melting.
It slides. Water-soluble product plus sweat plus moisture in the air means it re-dissolves and travels. You get that greasy, sliding, wet-looking hairline. That's a formula that never had real hold, only initial grab.

What Actually Works on a High Dew Point Day
Seal before you style. A light oil on the hairline first slows the water exchange. This is the step people skip and it's the one that decides the day.
Use hold that isn't alcohol-driven. You want hold from the film it forms, not from something that flashes off and contracts.
Thin, even layer on lightly damp hair. Thick application dries on the outside while staying wet underneath, then cracks.
Tie it down two minutes. Satin scarf while the film sets. Matters more in humidity than any other weather.
